JAN/FEB/MAR 2007, News and Happenings.... Hi to all and sorry for the long lapse in updating the news section. (I'll try my best to keep this up when something notable happens-) New Years 2007 began in a very different location, Kuwait. I got a call to work with Nadia Turner, an amazing singer from Amercian Idol who I had recorded with in 2006. It was really an amazing experienct to go to the middle east and we had a great time. Plus a day off in London - amazing weather there. The people were very friendly in Kuwait and we all made it home safely... wish I could say the same for the bags...(thanks British Airways... haha) Later that month I did a few days in the studio with legendary drummer Zigaboo Modeliste. Zig has been writing some new material for sometime now, and it was great to be able to rehearse a few days and then go in to cut. Man, he is one funky drummer... We also did a live gig for Mardi Gras at the State Palace Theatre - late night... lots of fun! In Feb. I did a few tracks for an upcoming record by Harry Shearer (of Spinal Tap/Simpsons fame). Harry was great to work with and the tunes were really great. He has a radio show in LA and is a part time resident in New Orleans. Outside of some other sessions I've been working on producing some upcoming artists... stay tuned for links... That's all for now, be back soon Shane T More March News... I'm excited to be working with an amazing singer, Madeleine Peyroux next month touring Europe check the tour page for dates or check at: Madeleine's site. The new record entitled “The Grease Factor” is now done… last minute credits and liner notes are in the works now… the disc is scheduled for a mid-March release. The featured musicians are Drums: Jeff Sipe, (ARU, Jazz is Dead), Russell Batiste (The Meters, Vida Blue), John Vidacovich, (John Scofield, Astral Project). Bass: Adam Nitti (Dave Weckl, solo artist), Tony Hall (Dave Matthews, Emmylou Harris), Victor Wooten, and David Johnson. On keys the incredibly talented Johnny Neel (Govt Mule, X2) returns for another round. Other guests include saxophonist Jeff Coffin (Bela Fleck) and Kirk Joseph on sousaphone (Dirty Dozen Brass Band). The record has been engineered and mixed by one of the best in the business: Neal Cappelino, and the results sonically are amazing. Great guitar tones thoroughout and funky tunes with a little more of an aggressive approach than Highway 90, but still with the sprinkling of New Orleans seasonings… Shane: “I think compositionally and sonically this is a project that I’m really happy with — It took a while, but each tune on the project was written with a specific drummer in mind. With everyone’s schedule being so busy it was really hard to find a window where I could cut the tracks with the right guys at the same time. With the exception of a few “surprises” I had a pretty good idea of what each person would bring to the table- and man, these guys delivered the goods!” We’ll keep you posted in an upcoming mailing… In other news: Shane recently recorded 10 songs with singer songwriter Ossery for an upcoming release. Later that week, more overdubs were added to the X2 sessions with Johnny Neel and Matt Abts at Straight up Sound in Nashville. June-July, 2002 News and Happenings.... NEW WEBSITE!! At last the new website is done and up and running — thanks so much for being so patient. Shane promises to keep the new site updated regularly and answer any questions you may have. (Many thanks to Tim Boehlert and Jeff Boehlert for making the new site possible.) We will still be uploading more gear pics, new lessons and more photos as they arrive. There are also plans to provide transcriptions of the music from Highway 90 — please let us know your comments and suggestions! THE NEW RECORD... Shane has been in the studio working on the follow-up to Highway 90. During the week of June 17th, sessions took place at Straight Up Sound in Nashville, TN. On hand for the recordings were Shane, Johnny Neel on piano and keys, Adam Nitti on bass and Russell Batiste, the fabulous drummer for the Funky Meters (Russell can also be heard with the new group fronted by former Phish keyboardist Paige and Oteil Burbridge on bass). Drummer David Northrup also performed on one track. By all accounts, the stuff is SLAMMIN!! Shane tells us that the working title for the new project is The Grease Factor — because the tracks have such a greasy feel — it can’t not be greasy with drummers like John Vidacovich, Russell and Jeff Sipe on there! I’m excited about this project and feel that compositionally it will be a few notches up. Scott Henderson has also been sharing some tips with me for capturing tone on the tape... Engineer Neal Cappellino is planning to travel to Shane’s place outside New Orleans to record the guitar tracks and finish up the project — stay tuned! NEW LESSON IN GUITAR PLAYER Check out the August issue of Guitar Player magazine for Shane’s lesson. The lesson this month is on using the barre position in various styles — audio version is available at truefire.com. OTHER STUFF: Shane spent a lot of time in Nashville during June doing various projects including a Christmas record with Smokey Greenwell and bass legend Willie Weeks, several record company showcases and demo pre-production work. Summer touring with the Neville Brothers will start after July 4th... |
| Shane has been in the studio with the Neville Bros. for much of Feb and March recording and writing for an upcoming Neville Brothers CD. Shane can also be heard on new releases by Johnny Vidacovich, Henry Butler, Secret Commonwealth and Adam Nitti. On March 28th, Shane played a great show at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta with the Adam Nitti Group, opening up for Steve Smith and Vital Information. The band featured Adam Nitti on bass, Sonny Emory on drums (Earth Wind & Fire, Jean Luc Ponty, Dave Sanborn, etc...), Randy Hoexter on keys and Shane on guitar, and by all accounts this was a smoking show! Upcoming projects include a Christmas CD with harmonica virtuoso Smoky Greenwell, a children’s recordeducational project with longtime educator|drummer Zig Wajler, live gigs with Green Machine, the Neville Brothers and a CD release party with the Johnny Vidacovich Group at the Old Point Bar on May 1st. The follow-up to Highway 90 has been slow, but Shane expects a late fall release. Thus far tracks include drummers Johnny Vidacovich and Jeff Sipe, bassists Adam Nitti, David Johnson and on keys: Johnny Neel. Shane informs us that this disc will be a bit more aggressive than Highway 90, but still have all the elements groove-wise as the first. Stay tuned for a sneak preview as the tunes are mixed." |
